Conformance with Relevant External Standards

The DOI System has also been developed to ensure conformance with relevant generic external formal standards, including URL.

It implements the Handle System which conforms with the DO-IRP protocol: see Digital Object Identifier Resolution Protocol (DO-IRP) Specification.

The DOI Foundation supports the FAIR principles which provide guidelines to improve Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Reuse of digital assets. The FAIR principles emphasize machine-actionability (the capacity of computational systems to find, access, interoperate, and reuse data with none or minimal human intervention) because humans increasingly rely on computational support to deal with data as a result of the increase in volume, complexity, and creation speed of data. Note that FAIR principles may not be relevant to some use cases of the DOI System, for example EIDR.
